WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE…
So wrote the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge in ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’.
Sadly, in Kisumu it’s not quite true, at least not easily accessible water. In the UK, we simply go to the nearest tap and there it is, but children at many of Kisumu’s schools can’t do that. So we plan to change it – with your help!
At Doctor Robert Ouko Comprehensive School (DROCS), we recently funded a hydrological survey that identified water beneath the school site. The plan is to drill a borehole to provide fresh water for drinking, washing, and new water-flushed latrines.
This will entail building a water tower for storage, a solar-powered pumping system, and the toilets themselves. Solar power means that the school will not be dependent on an unreliable electricity supply and will save money in the future.
The staff and children at Tieng’re Comprehensive School (TICS) will testify to the benefits of having a reliable water supply and flushable toilets, provided by Kisumu Children Trust a few years ago with funding from our supporters and grants from trusts. It really has transformed their lives.
Quotes have been obtained for the work at DROCS and Rebecca and David, our new part-time Support Officers, are hard at work searching out possible sources of grants. Your contributions are welcome as well. The sooner we can raise the money, the sooner the children at DROCS will have this much-needed water supply.
The next time you turn on the tap, think about them and ask yourself, ‘Can I help?’
Thank you.
