It is always special to hear directly from the children themselves. As a new school year has just begun in Kenya, we spoke with several children who attend Cherry’s Free Lunch Programme to learn more about their thoughts, dreams, and experiences at school.
When we asked the children if they like going to school, all of them said YES! Here are their reasons, in their own words:
- I would like to achieve my dreams
- It is what I need
- I have everything I need
- School is what I need
- School help us when we grow up
- School helps us when we grow up
- It helps me to learn many things that will help me in the future
- I like going to school; they are teaching well to make my future
The children shared many things they enjoy about school:
- Reading and stories
- Playing football and other games
- Learning new things
- Writing and composition
- Going to the farm
- Exploring different subjects
Favourite subjects:
- Mathematics
- English
- Swahili
- Agriculture
- Christian Religious Education (C.R.E), because it teaches about God
These conversations remind us that every child has a story, a dream, and a spark of curiosity waiting to be nurtured. Listening to their voices reminds us of the power of education to transform lives, open doors, and create hope for the future.
Every child deserves the chance to learn, explore, and dream — and when they do, the possibilities are endless.
